Kyle Clark was flying planes out of Highgate before he sketched the electric aircraft he's trying to build at Beta Technologies. In the years since, Vermont has sprouted an impressive number of homegrown enterprises relative to its size: Mark Bonfigli was a local car guy whose desire to better control inventory and advertising inspired him to hatch. The cofounder of IBM, Thomas Watson, famously built a plant here in 1957 because he liked to ski.
